August 4, 2004

Where ever has the summer gone.  It seems like just yesterday we were waiting for the foaling season to begin and it is now nearing the time when weaning and Manners 101 will commence.

Amberfields Anthem Moro and Hmstd RainwashedWe have again been blessed with an awesome group of foals.  Zipper once again has out done himself.  The last foal of the season was the first Stormwashed foal to be born in Canada.  If Hmstd Rainwashed is an indication of things to come, we can hardly wait to see Stormwashed standing at the Homestead.

Haying season is upon us and we have had to take on some custom baling in order to get enough hay to see us through the winter.  The grasshoppers did a great job of making sure that our hay crops were not worth cutting.  It has almost doubled the work load on an already stretched too thin schedule but the smell of fresh cut hay and the thoughts of having our hay shed and loft packed to the brim is worth every every aching muscle.

It seems that there is never enough time to get all the things done on the list before the first snow flies.  We started off so well this spring but once again we are under the gun.  Hopefully before winter sets in, one will find us with a newly expanded mares pen enclosed with pipe railing and a new stallion pen with a view of the mares and a brand new shelter.  If not, I guess there is always next year!

It has been a busy time at the Homestead.  The majority of our 2004 foals have been born and we are pleased with the results.  All are from our stallion R-Two Little Zipper and looking at the foals it is very easy to see his trademark stamp on each foal.  The filly foal born, Hmstd Tear Drop, had the misfortune of having her leg stepped on. Within her first week, she has made to trips to the vet clinic.  The first was to put a 10" pin in her leg and the second trip was to put a cast on the leg to hold everything in place.  The overall determination of this filly to continue on is truly remarkable.  Breeding season is in full swing and we have decided to breed to Rum Runner exclusively this year.   Zipper is standing for a few outside mares and will spend the summer as John's pleasure mount.
