March 20th, 2004

The time is quickly flying by and in about six weeks our first foals will be announcing their presence.  This is always an exciting time on the Homestead.  The mares are already starting to show signs that they want this pregnancy over.  As much as we are excited about the impending births, we are anxious to get the breeding season underway.  Proposed breedings are planned so far in advance you would think it would take away some of the excitement but it certainly doesn't.  Keep checking back to see who will be siring Homestead foals next year, we just might have a few surprises up our sleeves.

What a great union we have formed with Hillcroft Farm.  Every step of this venture has been well thought out and planned.  Nothing has been left to chance and our goals have been documented and planned far into the future. We have some lofty plans for the future but each stage will not be executed before the time is right.  Through all this the Morgan breed must be the winner.

Hmstd Lil Bit Of Heaven and Hmstd Shuda Bin A Cowboy were delivered to their new owners in northern California in early December.  This was their first trailer ride and it was a big one.  They just travelled like pros, ate and drank all the way and never broke a sweat.  California in December is gorgeous and it was hard to believe that we had left the land of winter coats and boots and were able to walk around in short sleeves.  It was very tough to say goodbye to our babies but it sure made our hearts feel good knowing that they have such wonderful new owners and such promising futures ahead of them.

Shehana Reflection

Winter is upon us now in full force and spring seems a decade away.  We have gone through some bouts of -58C / -72F (yes those numbers are right) with the wind chill factor and not much seems to want to work in those temperatures including myself.  The horses from the very old to the very young take it all in stride.  There are mornings when I go out and there to greet me are big balls of fur covered in layers of frost.  Adios Reality is now five months old and is outside 24/7 and despite these frigid temperatures is growing like a weed.  I keep telling Rhythm 'n' Blues that this is the last winter she will have to endure these kinds of temperatures as she will be heading to Alabama in the spring.  Mind you I don't tell her about the heat she will have to contend with in the summer.

Foaling season will start around the 1st of May and lately that is all I have been thinking about.  The mares are all showing signs that the unborn foals are really starting to grow.  The thought of the impending arrival of 7 beautiful creatures waiting to steal a piece of my heart keeps me going in this unbelieveable cold winter.
