Born: May 7th, 2008 |
On March 10th Hija was 302 days in foal and had an accident that cut her heel bulb. Our vet came out and decided the best course of action was to put her leg in a cast and have her on stall rest for a month. By the end of the week it seemed that something was not right and we loaded Hija and drove the hour to the clinic. Blood tests revealed that she was severely anaemic and her liver was not functioning properly. Hija had to remain in the clinic but our vet Dr. Mike Ross assured us that he was going to do everything in his power to save Hija. The next day I received a call and was told that Hija had waxed up and I should be prepared for the fact that she would likely abort the foal. At that point it was decided that I would do the night shift at the clinic from
5 pm to 8 am. Monday as I was driving to the clinic my cell phone rang and Dr. Mike said she was dripping milk. Each and every day seemed to bring a new set of problems for Hija but she never gave up and continued to carry the foal. For four weeks I sat during the night with Hija and on the weekends and holidays John and I were at the clinic around the clock. The day finally came when blood work revealed that she was on the low end of normal and no longer considered anaemic. Her cast had been removed the previous week and we were given the green light to bring her home. Her due date came and went and with each passing day we got more concerned about the well being of the foal. On day 360 Hija quietly laid down and effortlessly gave birth to a beautiful colt.
I have been thinking about a name that would fit this colt and it got me to thinking about what a great job Hija did in not only surviving herself but for also hanging on to the foal. The colt is a fighter because he survived despite the odds and managed to make sure that he "cooked" darn near three weeks longer than he was supposed to. Last but certainly not least, there is Dr. Mike that was determined to make sure Hija would pull through and when that was accomplished wouldn't settle for any less than saving both mare and foal. All and all I would say it was a job Well Done by all concerned.
So taking all that into consideration I felt it very fitting for this young colt to be named Hmstd Well Done aka Tuff.
